    REFEREED SCHOLARLY PAPERS PUBLISHED IN CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS (ACADEMIC)

    • Full paper (6–8 pages, incl. references) for all presentation formats.
    • Short paper (4–5 pages, incl. references) for all presentation formats.
    • Work-in-progress paper (2–3 pages, incl. references) for poster presentation.
    • Doctoral colloquium paper (2–3 pages, incl. references) for oral presentation in the doctoral colloquium.

    EDUCATORS, XR DESIGNERS, ARTISTS, FUTURISTS, INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS (PRACTITIONER)

    The 9th International Conference of the Immersive Learning Research Network (iLRN 2023) will be an innovative and interactive gathering for a flourishing global network of researchers and practitioners collaborating to develop the scientific, technical, and applied potential of immersive learning. It is the premier scholarly event focusing on advances in the use of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and other extended reality (XR) technologies to support learners across the full span of learning—from K-12 through higher education to work-based, informal, and lifelong learning contexts.

    Scholars and professionals working from informal and formal education settings as well as those representing diverse industry sectors are invited to participate in the conference, where they may share their research findings, experiences, and insights; network and establish partnerships to envision and shape the future of XR and immersive technologies for learning; and contribute to the emerging scholarly knowledge base on how these technologies can be used to create experiences that educate, engage, and excite learners.

    Program Tracks

    Papers and proposals may be submitted to one of 10 program tracks, the first of which corresponds to fundamental knowledge contributions to Immersive Learning via the learning sciences, computer science, and/or game studies that are not linked to any particular application area. The remaining nine tracks are linked with areas of Immersive Learning applications and are likewise associated with iLRN Knowledge Tree Houses of Application.

    • Track 7. Medical & Healthcare Education (MHE)
    • Track 8. Nature & Environmental Sciences (NES)
    • Track 9. Workforce Development & Industry Training (WDIT)
    • Track 10. Self and Co-Regulated Learning With Immersive Learning Environments (SCILE)

    Paper/Proposal Submission & Review

    Papers for the Academic Stream must be prepared in standard double-column US Letter format using Microsoft Word or LaTeX, and will be accepted only via the online submission system Easy Chair.

    Proposals for the Practitioner Stream are also to be submitted via the online submission system Easy Chair and prepared in a practitioner submission template.

    Note:  A double blind peer-review process will be used to evaluate all submissions.

    Publication, Abstracting, and Reviewing

    ACADEMIC STREAM

    All accepted and registered papers and extended abstracts submitted to the Academic Stream that are presented at iLRN 2023 will be published in the indexed Conference Proceedings subject to meeting scope and quality requirements.

    In addition, authors of selected papers may be invited to submit expanded versions of their papers for consideration by a number of Scopus and Web of Science-indexed journals.

    PRACTITIONER STREAM

    A separate proceedings book with ISBN and individual DOIs will be produced for those who submit extended abstracts to the Practitioner Stream.

    Special Track 1

    Immersive learning across Latin America: State of Research, Use Cases and Projects

    Description

    Latin America is a region with many developing countries in which the adoption of immersive learning has been restricted by different factors such as connectivity, affordability of technology, lack of training and lack of content. Despite these constraints, some researchers and companies have been developing immersive learning projects that consider the limitations in the region and the possibilities of the technology. This special track is proposed by the Colombia and Ecuador iLRN chapters in an effort to disseminate and give visibility to the projects created in the region. The purpose of this special track is twofold: 1) To showcase the work done by academics, practitioners, companies and other stakeholders in the region in this prominent conference in the field of immersive learning. 2) To foster the collaboration between Latin America and the rest of the world in the field of immersive learning and strengthen of existing collaborations. This special track is relevant for the conference because it allows to collect evidence about the current state of research in immersive learning across Latin America and identify opportunities for collaboration and opportunities for further research in the field. Contributions for this special track should have been developed in Latin America or tested/evaluated in Latin American countries. Research conducted in collaboration between Latin American countries and other regions in the world is acceptable.

    • Systematic reviews, scoping reviews, surveys or meta-analysis of immersive learning in Latin America.
    • Design, development and validation of immersive learning projects in Latin America.
    • Discussions about the metaverse in education across Latin America.
    • Co-creation and co-design of immersive learning in Latin America.
    • Empathy-driven immersive experiences in Latin America.
    • Preferred pedagogical approaches for immersive learning in Latin America.
    • Affordances of and limitations to immersive learning in Latin America.
    • Policies around immersive learning in Latin America.
    • Trending technologies and possibilities for certain technologies in Latin America.
    • Research communities and experiences in building communities around immersive learning in Latin America.

    Special track format

    Submissions to this Special Track must adhere to all requirements stipulated for the relevant contribution type within the Academic Stream or the Practitioner Stream, the submissions go through the normal peer-review process and follow the same guidelines for the types of papers.

    Papers can be submitted in English, Spanish or Portuguese but to be published as part of the proceedings the papers should be translated to English. The papers can be presented in English, Spanish or Portuguese at the conference.

    The types of papers that can be submitted for this special track are:

    • Full (6–8 pages) paper for oral presentation
    • Short paper (4–5 pages) for oral presentation
    • Work-in-progress paper (2–3 pages) for a poster presentation
